This made me lose my shit.

"This is The Challenge - Record an album in 28 days, just because you can. That’s 10 songs or 35 minutes of original material recorded during the month of February. Go ahead… put it to tape.Don't wait for inspiration - taking action puts you in a position to get inspired. You'll stumble across ideas you would have never come up with otherwise, and maybe only because you were trying to meet a day’s quota of (song)writing. Show up and get something done, and invest in yourself and each other."

Moving. I really want to try this year, mostly to avenge the massive software failure that marred my 2008 entry. I don't know how much I'll be able to get done though, I'm way into Fallout 3 right now, and extracurricular things are starting to suffer. Not to mention I've been working on one specific song for 4 months... I can see the finish line, then I'm pretty sure I can bust out 35 minutes of acoustic Casio ditties and half-assed ambient stuff.

Yeah! What's up!

Raising money for sick kids to play video games in the hospital!

We're taking a break from regular shows for a hefty bit of time so we can write more stuff, do remixes and massage the extravaganza of tangled cords I made out of our A/V gear at the last show.

What the fuck.

ohh shiiiiiiit
today I:

- did the dishes
- listened to the smiths

but this is a sign that finally I'm starting to have some free time! yesterday I even went out for dinner!

and remember, folks, this Saturday

(why does blogger insert so much nonsense-markup when you upload an image? why does it say "1 comments"? bizarre)

another thing, using sends/returns simplifies things a-lot

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Photobucket

10:30 - BRAVEYARD
11:30 - MAP TO TEMENOS
12:30 - THE SATANS
01:30 - ERRAND BOY

www.childsplaycharity.org

"Since 2003, we’ve set up and organized Child’s Play, a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in our network of over 40 hospitals worldwide. In four short years, you as a community have answered the call and come together to raise millions of dollars.

That was awesome. You guys have proven over and over again that you are an overwhelming force, and you really came through and made a real difference to the millions of kids that children’s hospitals care for each year. So we’re doing it again this year, only this time we’ve expanded Child’s Play to more hospitals around US and the globe so you can send toys to a hospital a little closer to home.

Child’s Play works the same as last year. With the help of hospital staff, we’ve set up gift wish lists full of video games, toys, and movies. You can go to each hospital’s list and buy a toy, and that toy will be sent to the hospital. Some of these kids are in pretty bad shape. Imagine being stuck alone in a hospital over the holidays, getting something from a fellow gamer would really raise their spirits. Some of the stuff the hospital will give away for kids to keep, while other gifts (like consoles) will be kept by the hospital for patients to use throughout the year.

We are arguably the largest community of gamers on the internet. The important word there being community. We are not a faceless corporation and you are not just a number tracked by a database and then relayed to hungry advertisers. You guys have proven yourselves to be a powerful force when stirred into action. Here is your opportunity to use that power to do some real good."

WELL

we can still say we've never played an all ages show

Sunday, November 9, 2008

I can't wait for winter!!

This Friday (the 14th) we're playing 10 PM at Distortion, with A/V http://www.myspace.com/avhotaction (from New Brunswick) and The Kettle Black http://www.myspace.com/nickjohannes (from Ottawa) as well as Glenn Tizzard's new two piece band

but

We're also playing with the same bands on Saturday at around 3:30 PM, and it's our first all-ages show ever! I hope people turn out for these guys, OK Giraffe didn't get as many people as they should have because people thought 2004 was the best year of their lives and think Club One is a great experience.

SOME PEOPLE ...

today is Halloween! microsoft showed a bunch of bull from windows 7! I still don't know what to dress up as! we're playing at the ship ~10:30!

Monday, October 27, 2008

"Fistfighting with Trees"

"Go Away and Never Come Back"

"Sand (Microphones(Eric's Trip))"

"Yes with an If
"

I wish I had thought of dressing up like Nic Cage in "The Wicker Man" early enough to design the cage to wear around my head and tiny fake bees to sting me in the eyes. Halloween is 4 days away and I'm more worried about re-cutting a few of our lower quality old videos and finishing a new song before the show at the Ship. The Rock Can Roll Festival is over, and Noise fold were great, they've really made me consider putting down $450 on Max/MSP just for the sheer experimentation factor http://www.myspace.com/noisefold

best part of my day? dudes from Noisefold coming into work and shaking my hand in congratulations for the Errand Boy presentation at Friday's conference

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

To re-iterate and summarize what Mike posted, we're doing a lecture 8PM this Friday (the 24th) at Eastern Edge Arts Gallery as part of the Rock Can Roll Festival, and we're going to be speaking about laptop music, the a/v performance thing we have going on, and we'll go through the process of constructing a song and explain how to be rad dudes like us.

The cool thing about it is the other lecturers are actually interesting, somebody from BlocksBlocksBlocks recording is giving a lecture... they put out a bunch of Final Fantasy records, something by Fucked Up, Ninja High School and Les Mouches. Check the schedule Mike posted anyway, it's all PWYC and pretty cool (except for us) (*sad trumpet sound*)

We got the nod to play at The Ship on Halloween with The Subtitles, Mercy the Sexton and Texas Chainsaw, so there's probably going to be a few dozen slutty nurses dancing to alt-country with they jugs out if you're in the mood for that sort of thing. I'm working on a cover and a new song to debut at the sh0w, I'm just waiting for a day off to break out the banjo and record some drums.

In other news I've taught myself how to finger tap on guitar, which is the best thing in the world for me because i have tiny baby fingers that can't stretch or hold a pick right and tapping is the only way I can play guitar like i'm your 5 year old brother trying to beat you at Tekken and have it still sound like actual music.

"Hi, we're Errand Boy"

October 4th (Distortion), 10th (CBTGs), 11th (Distortion), 17th (Junction's), 18th (Turner's), 21st (CBTGs), 24th (Eastern Edge), 25th (Ship Inn), 31st (Ship Inn)

what the hell! this is a busy, busy month. so far we've only got one show in November (on the 21st). we did get most of September off though, is this some sort of karma?

sometime after Christmas—probably in late January/February—we're maybe going on a mini tour around the bay with Amusia, and then we've got a big journey to Toronto planned with Map to Temenos in June

you know what that means? merch merch merch! Bryan's worked out some sort of thing with a guy at his work to get a loan of a wacom tablet, hopefully for stickers (and/)or shirts. and there's a lot of stuff in the tubes in terms of songs, set changes and ideas

this coming Friday at the Eastern Edge we'll be presenting our "process creating performance by merging sound and moving images" as a part of the Rock Can Roll Festival. basically tell you all of our secrets while showing the basics of Ableton Live and where to find good source videos. there will be three other presenters. you've probably heard of them too

Conference - Eastern Edge Gallery
SESSION TWO
Artists in Session Two will discuss and demonstrate unique approaches to community building, art-making and performance.

  • 4:00pm - Coffee and Talk Touring with the Class War Kids and Jeffy T of the Brat Attack
  • 5:00pm - BlocksBlocksBlocks with Magali Meagher - Performer and musician Magali Meagher is a member of Block Recording Club and will present on their work. Blocks Recording Club is an Artist-Owned Worker’s Co-operative based in Toronto. Their goal is to work together as a musical community to help each other to record and release music.
  • 6:00pm - Volatile Works Media Collective - Glenn Gear and Brad Colbourne are both media artists and members of Montreal based Volatile Works Media Collective. They will screen and discus new work from the collective.
  • 7:00pm - Noisefold - NoiseFold is David Stout and Cory Metcalfe from Santa Fe, New Mexico. They create interactive visual-music-noise performances that draw equally from mathematics, science and the visual and sonic arts.
  • 8:00pm - Errand Boy - Errand Boy will discuss their process creating performance by merging sound and moving images.
the full schedule is available online. it's three days worth of shows and conferences; something like twelve shows. chances are you'll end up at one of them over the weekend

  • wednesday nights are a mess of teased hair and cleavage
  • hearing a youth talking about how obama would somehow turn the states into a black supremacy, that's a sign to bail
  • when the band from aways cholo guitarist starts playing like a dude from korn, that's the sign to bail
  • tapping is the new scene thing. although mitch is sick on it

out of the x number of years I've been playing shows with bryan (I think 2 or 3), I would definitely put tonight's show in the top 3

p.s I've got $42.50 for you bryan

Friday, October 3, 2008

I had a day. an exhausting, long day. where things happened that mean I have go to to stavenger dr. tomorrow morning following a visit to the bank to clear a deposit that should have had no problems with it whatsoever, then lug a 24" monitor home on the bus

since when did people working CSR jobs at call centers start doing things properly and by the books? I didn't do a single thing properly at Convergys but I did get things done and quickly and without complaints

anyways, the fact that the Ubuntu 8.10 Beta detected my Macbook 2,1 (atheros chipset) wireless makes up for it all

the big show is tomorrow! come to hava java before and say hi to me

Finally got a CD I completely forgot buying on eBay, a one-off side-project by the guys behind my favorite band Collections of Colonies of Bees. A lot of recordings these guys have done have relied on the setting of their performance for a lot of mood, and I think this one really goes all out with that.

The Portable Quartet is Jon Mueller (percussion), Chris Rosenau (banjo), Jim Schoenecker (oscillator), and Thomas Wincek (melodica). In early June, 2005, a select group of people were mailed invitations with detailed instructions of the time, date, and which train to board at the Milwaukee Amtrak station. Then, on June 25, after a 30 minute train ride south, the attendees arrived in Sturtevant, WI. Upon their entry into the 100-year-old empty train station, this performance by The Portable Quartet began; the combined sounds of banjo strings, human breath blown through a tube, vibrating drum snares from gong recordings, and the whizzing tones of the oscillator, all while an unknown set of false teeth lay on the ground near the attendee’s feet.

In this grouping, the individual histories of the players mesh. Moments of fragile country silence, back porch finger picking, and strange machinery combine with bombastic squeals and rattling chugs. Recorded using both analog and digital equipment, the recorded mix allows both methods to be heard at various points; the dusty sound of old tape and the clarity of new technology, so as to listen in the ‘past’ and ‘present.’ This night was a celebration; of chance, adventure, history, present moments, and life one step ahead of the imminent future we all face. After approximately one hour, another train arrived to pick everyone up and take them home. A few months later, the station was demolished.

IT OWNS. It's out of print (limited run of 100) and the only search results I can find for it are their record labels own bio, so that's kind of criminal, because these guys are brilliant. And amazing. And I want them to be my girlfriend.

Oh jesus I took the wrong pair of pants to work with me... I took my svelt young brother's 32 waist corduroys, and while I'm proud that I can fit into them, it feels like my lower half is trapped in the mouth of a giant snake, and my kidney's are starting to shut down. I've just been chilling for the past hour or two on facebook with my pants wide open, wearing an untucked cowboy shirt draped over my open fly.

"Now that Bryan, he's a real straight shooter..."

[i walk by in a wife-beater and track pants]

I'm actually curious what I have to do to get fired now (short of necrophilia) so I'm watching some amazing Busta Rhymes videos, among which, visually, and conceptually, this is the greatest.

Go to this, buy EP, Errand Boy remix of "Oceans" lies therein.

so I have no idea how to use blogger. for a google property you would expect it to be more sensible than it is.

but I did finally get around to trying out chrome for the first time. it is fast (what in lords name, when I switched back and forth from "Edit HTML" and "Compose" the font-size of this paragraph was twice its original size. [oh my god this thing is going crazy]. [okay it just seems to behave terribly in safari. strange when you consider google chose the same rendering engine for their own browser])
